Beyond Lotion & Potion: Benefits of CBD

When your loved one ages, you may notice that they’re experiencing issues that are typical for senior citizens: weakness, pain, problems with sleeping and more. While regular exercise, a healthy diet, and other medications in their health care plan can provide some relief, sometimes you may wonder if there are ways your loved one can get additional help. CBD may provide some helpful effects that can improve your loved one’s quality of life.

“We’re dedicated to learning more about ways to soothe and help seniors maintain their wellbeing, and we highly encourage caregivers to speak with their loved ones and their families about finding the best ways to do so,” Monica Bonilla, Community Outreach Director of YourLife™ of Pensacola. “CBD may provide more wellness opportunities for seniors.”

In this blog, we’ll go over the basics of CBD and how seniors can use it to benefit their health.

What Is CBD?

When people hear CBD, they may think of the commonly known psychoactive element of cannabis plants, THC. However, CBD is a separate compound. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the other compound found in cannabis plants and is not psychoactive, which means when someone takes CBD, they do not get the high that is typically associated with cannabis plants. CBD qualities include:

  • Reduces the release of molecules that promote inflammation
  • Antioxidant properties

CBD can also be absorbed into the body in ways other than smoking. There are many different kinds of lotions, salves, balms, or other topical products that one can use. Another way one can take CBD is to consume it through edible products. Now that you are more familiar with what CBD is, let’s look into what it does.

How Does CBD Benefit Seniors?

We listed issues regarding pain, weakness, and insomnia as obstacles that seniors may struggle with and may not have found a solution that suits them. CBD could be the answer. When seniors take CBD, it can act as a pain reliever. Seniors with certain health conditions that can inhibit them from doing things they’d enjoy may be able to incorporate CBD into their routine and find that they don’t have those painful symptoms anymore.

CBD as a sleep aid can also help your loved one stay asleep so the body can go through the proper cycles and be well-rested. When sleep cycles are disrupted, the body cannot heal itself and your loved one’s health can suffer. Getting enough sleep also acts as a preventative measure to developing Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

For seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s, they may have increased agitation. CBD may be able to help with this as it can soothe those who take it. This may help seniors stay relaxed and calm in an environment and could in turn provide more opportunities for them to participate in group activities, which will keep their minds engaged and help them feel connected.
